The posters were one of the very first attempts at mass marketing , long before the introduction of TV and internet advertising .
Railway companies proliferated , and many were in direct competition with each other . They were keen to increase passenger numbers and enticed families to venture out and travel to destinations away from the dirty and smoke filled inner cities and out into the fresh air of the countryside and seaside.
Poster Size Information
- The outside dimensions of all British Railway Posters are 70cm x 50 cm ( 27.6 inches x 19.7 inches ) and are the same dimensions for both Portrait and Landscape products.
- Each image has a white border around it which can vary in size from poster to poster but is included in the total outside dimension . This can make the actual " internal coloured image " vary slightly from product to product.
- This size has been chosen so that the posters fit a standard European frame , an excellent range of which are sold at IKEA stores.
