LOCOMOTION

One of George Stephenson’s first engines was the ‘Locomotion ‘

( initially called “ Acitve “) which took to the rails in 1825 , and is depicted in this 1925 poster . It was similar in design to those produced for the collieries at Killingworth and Heaton . The boiler had a single fire tube and two vertical cylinders let into the barrel. The four driving wheels were coupled by rods and not chains .
